Bamboo cuttings

Got a small section of bamboo from Jamie the other day and I have
turned it into mallet cutting and poked them into a half potting /half
sand mix. They seem to have just dried up, but we shall see. I also
just put a couple of the left over twigs directly into water.

Strawberry information

This is from the newsletter I get each week I get from New Zealand Gardener

Q. Is it too late to plant strawberries? I've read that it's time to fertilise so am worried that I've run out of time. Can I fertilise at planting or do I just add some of my yummy compost on the area where I am going to plant them? Denise Gabites

A. You can still plant strawberries. In fact, you can generally buy punnets of strawberry plants, or larger individual potted plants, from now until early summer. Add a layer of compost now and gently dig it into your soil. Feed in spring with comfrey 'tea' to supply potash, or a potassium-based fertiliser such as tomato or strawberry food. Potassium enhances fruit development and can be found naturally in comfrey leaves (you will find comfrey plants in the herb section of most garden centres). Jane Wrigglesworth

Bare Root Fruit trees

Having brought and planted some fruit trees earlier in the winter, I thought this website had some very good advice for them.

http://www.sgaonline.org.au/info_barerootfruit.html

Looks like I might have to spray my peach tree with something if it gets leaf curl...

and I will have to prune the trees regularly.

Interesting

Bed 1 all ready to go

Planted up this bed a few weeks ago and as now things are starting to happen and things are starting to grow I thought I'd take a photo to document it. It ha garlic, shallots, onions, and celery. I also have some more onions to go in, but they are too small at the moment.

This is our harvest of onions. How cool are they? 18 in total

Pineapple

We harvested our pineapple the other day. It was sweet and juicy
although we weren't too sure when to pick it. We waited until it was
yellowing and then it came off it's stalk quite easily. Sophie is
going to plant the top to try and make another plant. Further news
about this will follow.

Rain

We got rain today, so the temperature was a little bearable around 24.
The garden is looking better now the oasis has benn turned into a crop
circle LOL. Much bigger. You can see the chickens like eating the
grass seed which didn't grow and they also like dust bathing in the
patchy earth.

Cool use for a tree trunk stub

This "pot" is at my friends house Jane. A tree stump was hollowed out
and then a plant potted in it. Interesting idea. The cacti in this
picture were included for Stuart who just 'loves' them.

Pineapples

Who would have thought it, a pineapple plant that can withstand the NZ
climate. We were told that these fruit are sweeter than shop bought
ones and that you can plant them anywhere. Ummm we shall see. Although
this one looks like a good plant and has at least three offshoots
already so does this mean that we get three more pineapples?

Spiky cactus garden

Here's Sophie in her pjs gardening early Sunday morning. This is just
a nice photo of how the garden is looking great at the moment

Veggie garden under construction

Here's a picture of the four new beds made today. As mentioned before
these are made from old pallets. The next stage will be putting them
in place and filling with soil and compost. The weedmat can then be
cut and pinned down.

Making veggie gardens

Here's Sophie tearing pallets apart (almost with her bare hands) ready
to make veggie gardens for our new area. This area has now got a fence
to keep the cats and chickens out.

Full instructions on how to make these relatively free gardens on
another day.

Veggie patch number

The Tomatoes are starting to flower, a rogue pumpkin has flower buds
too, capsicums which are flowering, onions in the front and are
starting to look a little plump. Silverbeet which I picked a couple of
leaves and put on an eggs beni yesterday.

Christmas pressy

Blackberry bush which is thornless. Don't know where to plant it yet
as they have a habit of spreading, but can't wait for next years crop.
